We led the design development of the LAMY safari Kurutoga, bringing together the distinctive identity of the LAMY safari and Mitsubishi Pencil’s innovative rotating-lead technology. The task required a careful translation of the safari’s established design DNA into a technically different writing instrument with its own construction, proportions and functional requirements. Rather than simply transferring familiar visual elements, the design had to be thoughtfully reinterpreted to create a coherent and authentic new member of the safari family. At its core, the Kurutoga mechanism incrementally rotates the lead while writing, preventing one-sided wear and maintaining a consistently sharp point. This enables finer, more uniform lines while reducing smudging and lead breakage, making the technology particularly relevant for precise and detailed writing. The LAMY safari Kurutoga is a considered evolution of an established design identity, adapted to a new technology and a contemporary writing culture.
