We led the design process for the LAMY safari KURUTOGA, bringing together the distinctive identity of the LAMY safari and Mitsubishi Pencil’s innovative rotating-lead technology. A central focus was to preserve the familiar character of the safari while translating its established design language into a contemporary mechanical pencil. The KURUTOGA mechanism continuously rotates the lead while writing, maintaining a sharp point and enabling precise, consistent lines with reduced breakage, smudging, and tip movement. Through careful refinement of proportions, functional integration, details, materials, and colours, the technology was seamlessly incorporated without compromising the ergonomic grip, iconic metal clip, and recognisable silhouette. The result is a technically advanced writing instrument that feels both unmistakably LAMY safari and distinctly relevant today.
